You would think – another movie about the queen and the monarchy. Another story about how it is to be a wealthy, powerful queen. But it is not so. Not this time. If you expect to learn something from the historical or political point of view, you will probably be disappointed. Of course, there is a historical background settled in a particular time.
It all happens in the moment, when Tony Blair becomes a Prime Minister and Princess Diana dies in the car crash in Paris. Not historical facts but both royal family’s and society’s feelings play the leading role in the film.
...as her own life was often, sadly touched by tradegy...
she touched the lives, of so many others in...
in Britain, throughout the world...
with joy...
and with comfort.
The people, everywhere...
not just here in Britain, everywhere...
they kept faith, with Princess Diana.
They liked her, they loved her...
they regarded her, as one of the people...
she was the people's Princess.
And that's how she will stay...
how she will remain.
In our hearts..
The film is definitely two – dimensional. Firstly, it shows the institution of a queen deeply rooted in tradition and customstaken from the past. What is more, it is unchanging and more and more misunderstood by the country. It is hard for the Queen to behave the way the people expect in the moment of great grief after Diana’s death. We can see disagreements between the monarchy and British people appearing in this hard situation. Secondly, we observe the relation between the Queen and the Prime Minister. The relation, that is at the beginning resembling the one of a master and a servant. It is the Queen's Prime Minister and the Queen’s government. She is the one who decides, always decesivelyand thoroughgoing. There is only one person who is her adviser - her mother. In her advice we notice traditional thinking opposite to Blair’s modern and prospective. There is one more think. Watching it you can find out about three relations – royal family’s to Diana, people’s to Diana, people’s to the Queen as well as the clash between them.
- I've never been hated like that before.
- Then, that must have been difficult..
- Yes... very.
- Nowadays people want glamour, and tears, the grand performance.
I'm not very good at that, I never have been...
I prefer to keep my feelings to myself.
And foolishly I believed that was what people wanted from their Queen...
not to make a fuss, nor wear one's heart on one's sleeve...
duty first, self second.
That's how I was brought up...
that's all I've ever known.
Is this film worth seeing? Definitely it is. Even if you are the British Queen you have to listen and perceive nation. As the film shows, tradition is important but it has to adjust to changing realities that sometimes are cruel. There is not always place for protocols but is always for human kindness.
When you get it wrong, you really get it wrong...
that woman has given her whole life in service to her people.
50 years doing the job, she never wanted...
a job she watched kill her father...
she's executed it with honour, dignity, and as far as I could tell...
without a single blemish, and now we're all baying for her blood.
All because she's struggling to lead the world in mourning
for someone who threw everything she offered back in her face.
and who for the last few years seemed commited 24/7
to destroying everything she holds most dear.
